Whether you’re caring for carpets in the office or at home, the colder months of Autumn and Winter have your poor floors asking for trouble. Be it moisture buildup or muddy boots, this is the time of year that we need to stay sharp in order to maintain a clean carpet. The best way to do this is by sticking to a few tried and true rules for keeping a carpeted area in top condition. It’s going to involve time, effort, equipment and – most importantly – you!
So let’s get to it!
Dirt is not a welcome guest!
Winter storms wet the ground outside while cold weather sees that the moisture sticks around in the soil for days, weeks and even months! We can’t help but trample through a puddle or two, and the result is a world of dark mud sitting dangerously under your shoe!
What you can do:
- Set out a strict ‘no shoes indoors’ policy in your home (put a sign up if you have to
- Arrange an area near the front door with a rug or protective surface where people can take off their dirty, wet shoes (without having to stand outside in the cold)
- Take a page from Japan’s book and keep a nice row of ‘inside shoes’ near the front door; like slippers, these shoes can keep your toes warm without compromising cleanliness or the quality of your carpet
More Vacuuming = Less Cleaning!
That’s right. Even when the floors don’t necessarily look dirty, a weekly vacuum is still vital in the process of maintaining a mint carpet. Our eyes don’t tend to see the microscopic soil and dust buildup happening within the fibres of our carpets, but our vacuum cleaners can make short work of this! If left too irregular, you’ll find that soil won’t want to shift as easily, which means that clean carpets are only going to be possible with the help of a professional.
What you can do:
Set up a roster to get the whole house vacuumed at least once a week. For rooms that get a lot of use, you could even go for two times a week (especially around the entrance way). Be sure to dust your shelves and other such surfaces so that once your house has been cleaned it can stay clean.
